Speed Up and Optimize Your Slow PC: Avoid Data Loss

By sampalm | January 25, 2023

As a computer user, you know that over time, your computer can start to run slower and not as efficiently as it did when you first got it. As we discussed in our previous post, this can be very frustrating, especially if you rely on your computer for work or other important tasks. But don’t worry, there are steps you can take to speed up your Windows 10 or Windows 11 operating system on your computer and get it running like new again.

Disk Cleanup

One of the first things you can do is run a disk cleanup. This is a built-in tool in Windows that can help you free up space on your hard drive by deleting unnecessary files. To access disk cleanup, simply type “disk cleanup” in the search bar and select the program that pops up. From there, you can select which files you want to delete, such as temporary internet files and files in your recycle bin.

Defragmenting/Optimizing

Next, let’s talk about defragmenting your hard drive. This is a process that organizes the files on your hard drive so that your computer can access them more efficiently. To defragment your hard drive, type “defragment” in the search bar and select the program that pops up. From there, you can select which drive you want to defragment and the program will do the rest.

If your computer is equipped with a solid state drive, you will want to optimize it instead of defragmenting it through the “optimize” option in the same section as defragmenting. This will ensure your SSD is running at its best possible performance. Upgrading to a solid state drive (SSD) from a traditional hard drive can significantly enhance the speed and performance of your computer. At Restore Computer Repair, we can help you with this upgrade and make your computer run like new again.

Virus Scan

Another important step is to run a virus scan. This will help you identify and remove any malware or viruses that may be slowing down your computer or causing issues such as blue screen errors. There are many different antivirus programs available, but we at Restore Computer Repair recommend ESET Antivirus. It is an effective and user-friendly program that can be purchased through us, as we are authorized ESET resellers.

Windows Updates

You should also keep your computer updated. This means installing any updates or patches that are available for your operating system and any programs you have installed. To check for updates, simply go to the settings menu and select “update and security.”

Additional Issues

After running all these steps, if your computer is still not running as fast as you’d like, it could mean one of two things: First, Windows 10 and 11 can be very resource-intensive and require a hard drive or RAM upgrade in order to run faster and more efficiently. Second, your computer may be experiencing a hardware failure. Hardware failure can happen suddenly and without notice, causing you to lose all your data, files, pictures, etc. Typical signs of imminent hardware failure include long wait times, applications not responding or opening at all, freezing, and random errors. It could also be that you’re experiencing common problems such as the beginning phases of a hard drive failure or faulty RAM memory. If this is the case, bringing your computer in for service as soon as possible is important. At Restore Computer Repair, we specialize in computer repair. We can diagnose and fix any hardware issues your computer may be experiencing, including hard drive failures, insufficient or faulty RAM memory, and Windows corruption repair.
